The University will introduce a doctoral education system consisting of four doctoral schools and 32 doctoral programmes at the beginning of 2014. The goal of the reform is to improve the quality and efficiency of the doctoral education.


The University of Helsinki invites applications for

DOCTORAL STUDENT POSITIONS (5)

in the Drug Research Doctoral Programme for a 1–4 year period starting from 1.1.2014.

The Drug Research Doctoral Programme (DRDP) covers diverse areas in drug research, such as drug design and synthesis, bioactivity screening, drug formulation, industrial manufacturing, pharmaceutical microbiology, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, analytics, drug interactions, pharmacogenetics, pharmacology and clinical pharmacology, clinical drug research, pharmacoepidemiology, clinical pharmacy, pharmacoeconomics, toxicology and clinical toxicology and veterinary drug research. The home unit of the DRPD is the Faculty of Pharmacy, but doctoral student positions can also be located in other organisations performing drug research in the University. The Drug Research Doctoral Programme belongs to the Doctoral School in Health sciences.

A doctoral student must hold a Master’s degree or be accepted to pursue a Licentiate of Medicine or Licentiate of Dentistry degree in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki. Doctoral student requirements include good basic knowledge as well as a research proposal and study plan. The suitability and ability of the candidate to pursue postgraduate studies successfully are also evaluated. Doctoral students who have already started their doctoral training are also suitable to apply.

The duties of a doctoral student are to work on his or her own doctoral thesis and to complete his or her postgraduate studies. The duties also include teaching and other tasks. Fluent English language skills are required.

The University of Helsinki offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience. The salary will be based on levels 2–4 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee shall be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The salary will be EUR 2022–2970 per month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and work experience. The appointment starts with a probationary period of four months.

The application should include the following documents in English (font size 11, single line spacing), in the following order:

1)    letter of application, indicating the supervisor(s) and whether the appointee has belonged to a Doctoral programme or Graduate school  (max 1 page)
2)    short research plan and timetable, description of the appointee’s skills and summary of his / her previous research experience (max 3 pages),
3)    CV including a list of publications (max 3 pages),
4)    university degree certificates, and, for appointees from outside University of Helsinki, a copy of the highest Academic degree certificate
5)    written statement by the supervisor(s) about the appointee, content of the Doctoral degree, research project of the thesis and prerequisites of the research (max 2 pages).
