Employment programme for people with disabilities

The University of Helsinki launched an employment programme for people with disabilities as part of the University’s disability inclusion theme year 2022. In the spirit of positive action, the programme will primarily recruit people with disabilities to roles in the University's units. The employment programme is part of the University’s commitment to equality and diversity.

The programme is part of the University of Helsinki sustainability and responsibility plan. The programme will provide the University with important information on how recruitment processes should be developed further from the perspective of accessibility.

UN Convention on the rights of people with disabilities and the definition of disability

According to the Convention, “persons with disabilities include those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which in interaction with various barriers may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.”

The article 27 of the Convention provides for the right of persons with disabilities “to work on an equal basis with others; this includes the right to the opportunity to gain a living by work freely chosen or accepted in a labour market and work environment that is open, inclusive and accessible to persons with disabilities.”

Why are we involved?

The University of Helsinki wishes to promote equality in the workplace and the employment of people with disabilities. In 2022, the University launched a pilot employment programme for people with disabilities, in cooperation with the Finnish Disability Forum. The programme was launched as part of the University theme year of disability inclusion, with the aim of increasing awareness and build a more equal community.

The programme is included in the University’s sustainability and responsibility plan. Among the focus areas for sustainability and responsibility work set out in the plan are the promotion of equality and the prevention of discrimination in all our operations. Other measures outlined in the plan include developing accessibility and non-discrimination in recruitment, and increasing information on accessible routes on campuses. Our goal is to be a leader in creating an atmosphere of respect for diversity.

For further information on the University’s social responsibility activities, please see the sustainability and responsibility website.

Who can apply?

Positions opened through the programme are available, in particular, to individuals with a disability or long-term illness affecting their fitness for work based on their own evaluation.
