The Department of Political and Economic Studies (http://www.helsinki.fi/politicsandeconomy) is a multidisciplinary unit at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Helsinki, that comprises the disciplines of development studies, social and moral philosophy, social science history (political history as well as economic and social history), economics and political science. The Department also houses the Network for European Studies and the Helsinki Center of Economic Research (HECER). The Department is the largest Finnish unit in its field and is at the national forefront of research and education in the social sciences. It has a staff of 130. Each year an average of 200 Bachelor’s degrees, 130 Master’s degrees and 15 doctorates are completed at the Department.

The Department of Political and Economic Studies invites applications for the position of a

PROFESSOR IN POLITICAL HISTORY

The duties of the position include academic research, teaching, supervision of postgraduate studies and the examination of theses and dissertations as well as heading research projects in the field. There is another professorship in the discipline (http://www.helsinki.fi/poliittinenhistoria/index.htm) in addition to the position to be filled. There are also three university lectureships, of which one is joint with the discipline of economic and social history.

According to Section 33 of the Universities Act (No 558/2009), a professor shall carry out and supervise scientific work, provide teaching based on it, follow developments in science as well as participate in societal interaction and international cooperation in the field.

According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, the ability to provide top-level teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations as well as documentation of international cooperation in the research field that the appointee represents.

When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as participation in doctoral education. The applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research networks and elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills shall also be taken into account. When making the selection, diverse expertise in the field of political history shall be considered an asset.

According to the Government Decree on Universities, professors are required to be competent in the language in which they provide instruction, in other words, Finnish. They must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. In order to successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must also have good English skills.

The salary shall be based on levels 8–10 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee shall be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.

The application should include the following documents in English:

  • A curriculum vitae
  • A numbered list of publications
  • An informal report of no more than one page presenting the applicant’s scientific activity
  • A plan of no more than one page on how the applicant intends to carry out the duties of the position and develop the field
  • A report of no more than three pages on teaching qualifications (an academic portfolio, for instance)
  • A report on external funding acquired

 

Applicants are kindly asked to prepare for a situation in which, after the closing of the application period, the Faculty might request them to submit 10 publications of their choice to be sent to the assessors. The publications must be submitted as PDF attachments. Applicants should indicate these documents on their list of publications.
