ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR IN RISK ASSESSMENT IN FOOD SAFETY

The increasing complexity of foodstuffs and food production systems, mobility of humans, animals and food, and growing numbers of food frauds are jeopardizing food safety and control systems worldwide. This together with evolving epidemiology, resistance, and virulence of pathogens, and increasing number of vulnerable individuals possess new types of health hazards in food systems. High-quality research is needed to identify and characterize novel hazards, assess exposure, characterize risks, and develop methods for early recognition of risks, and risk assessment.

The position is a joint position between the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira (1.1.2019 onwards Finnish Food Authority), with a shared work time allocation for both affiliations (50% / 50%). The research, expertise and teaching field of the professorship is food safety/risk assessment in food safety. The professorship is based in the One Health Research Programme hosted by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Tasks in Faculty of Veterinary Medicine include academic research that supports scientific risk assessment in food safety, teaching and supervision related to scientific risk assessment in the veterinary curriculum, and societal interaction. Tasks in Evira include conduct of scientific risk assessments related to food safety and development of risk assessment methods as well as related scientific research and communication.

OPERATIONAL ENVIRONMENT

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-veterinary-medicine) is the only institution of higher education in Finland to produce veterinarians. The degree programmes have been accredited in accordance with the ESEVT system for the evaluation of veterinary education in Europe. The Faculty has four departments and a Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The professorship is placed in the Department of Food Hygiene and Environmental Health, which accommodates a state-of-the-art research infrastructure and nine active research groups working in the fields of food safety and quality, environmental health, meat inspection and slaughterhouse hygiene, food and environmental toxicology, and environmental health and food safety control.

The Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira (https://www.evira.fi/en) is a governmental organization with 700 employees in the field of food and feed safety, animal health and welfare, as well as plant health and quality. Evira’s duties include lead of official controls, reference laboratory activities, laboratory services, scientific risk assessment and scientific research. Evira is responsible for risk assessments in food safety that support preparation of new legislation and official food control.

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Evira are located in adjacent buildings in the Viikki Campus, Helsinki, and have a long-term collaboration in scientific research.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS AND ASSESSMENT OF THE QUALIFICATIONS

The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent full professorship or a fixed-term assistant/ associate professorship (tenure track), depending on his or her qualifications and career stage. An appointee to the position of an assistant/associate professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scientific research work, have the teaching skills necessary for the position, and have the ability and motivation for an academic career.

An appointee to a full professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader.

When considering applicants’ qualifications, account shall be taken to for example:
• applicant’s expertise in the research and teaching field
• scientific publications
• success in obtaining external research funding
• experience in leading research projects
• experience in teaching and supervision as well as other teaching merits
• experience in food safety risk assessment

• good oral and written communication skills

SALARY AND BENEFITS

• Monthly gross salary will be about 4 300–5 400 euros for assistant/associate professor and about 5 400–6 800 euros for professor depending on the applicant’s merits and career stage.
