HR Excellence in Research at the University of Helsinki

World-class research requires an excellent work environment, inspiring career opportunities and a strong work-life balance.
This is why the University is dedicated to continuously developing researchers’ working conditions, research environments and careers.
Vibrant research community

The University of Helsinki is a research-intensive university, with an international community of approximately 9 000 employees and 32 000 students.

For nearly 400 years, our University has united people and disciplines to create life-changing breakthroughs: from pioneering research innovations to empowering new generations of professionals.

Across our four campuses and 11 faculties, we cultivate top-level research and a vibrant academic environment.

Commitment to a high-quality work environment

The University aims to be the best place to teach, work and engage in research. This means providing excellent working conditions and attractive career paths. We are committed to continuously developing them to enable world‑class research.

As a demonstration of this commitment, the University applied for the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research award in spring 2026.

What does this quality commitment mean for researchers?

  • A dedication to making research careers more attractive and sustainable
  • A testament to excellence in services supporting researchers, fostering a stimulating environment for innovation and research
  • Adherence to open, transparent and credit-based recruitment procedures for researchers
  • A commitment to a set of shared values within the European Research Area – those outlined in the
European quality standards as a guideline

The University fully endorses the principles set out in the European Charter for Researchers, which outlines the rights of researchers within the European Research Area.

The application for the HR Excellence in Research award demonstrates our commitment to implementing these principles and connects us to a community of European universities, research organisations, and funders dedicated to continuously improving their practices and policies.

Action Plan 2026-2028

As part of the application process for the HR award, the University has drafted an Action Plan for the years 2026-2028 to further improve researchers’ careers, research environments and support in some of the key areas of the European Charter for Researchers.
