Doctoral Experience Week

The Doctoral School will be hosting the Doctoral Experience Week (DEW) 2026 in May. DEW2026 offers a platform to showcase the research conducted within in the Doctoral Programmes at the University of Helsinki while exploring the diverse futures for doctoral researchers after graduation. DEW206 also focuses on fostering connections with industries and the broader society.
What is DEW?

The Doctoral Schools will be hosting the Doctoral Experience Week (DEW) 2026. Taking place on 25.-28.5. at the University of Helsinki, DEW2026 offers a platform to showcase the research conducted within in the Doctoral Programmes at the University of Helsinki while exploring the diverse futures for doctoral researchers after graduation. DEW206 also focuses on fostering connections with industries and the broader society. 

The program will include a mix of different events for all doctoral researchers, including a kick-off for the new doctoral programmes, various forums and workshops, and Three Minute Thesis competition. In addition, the University of Helsinki Doctoral School is excited to host PhD Summerfest, on May 28th. This event welcomes all doctoral researchers and supervisors, and the party will be held in the Main Building.

Monday May 25

We will kick-off the week with a kick-off event for the new doctoral programmes in the afternoon.

9.00-12.00 Communicating your research – why and how? (City Center Campus)

  • Do you ever struggle to explain your research to people outside your field? Or wonder whether sharing your work publicly is even worth the effort? This training will help you find your voice as a researcher communicator. More information and registration in .

10.00-12.00 Networking 101 – tips and tricks for growing your professional footprint (Think Nook, Yliopistonkatu 4)

  • Networking is a skill that matters just as much in the academic world as it does in business. The earlier you start building your network, the stronger your connections will be. If you want to communicate your skills and research more effectively or are looking for new collaborators, this workshop is for you. .

10.00-12.00 Pitch Clinic – to-dos and don’ts of presenting yourself (Think Lounge, Yliopistonkatu 4)

  • As a researcher, you have to know how to explain what you do efficiently; at conferences, in funding applications, when meeting collaborators, or when exploring different career paths. Being able to communicate yourself clearly and confidently is an essential skill. This interactive Pitch Clinic is designed for those who want to sharpen how they present themselves and their work. .

13.00-15.00 CV Clinic – guide to the perfect resume (Think Lounge, Yliopistonkatu 4)

  • Your CV communicates your expertise, strengths, and career direction. For doctoral researchers, CV expectations can vary significantly depending on whether you are applying for academic positions, funding or any professional opportunities. Knowing how to tailor and structure your CV effectively is essential. .

14.15-17.00 Goal Mapping for Doctoral Researchers (Language Center, Fabianinkatu 26)

  • In this workshop organized by Career Services, the participants work on and give concrete form to our personal goals. The process combines writing and drawing, allowing them to engage our creative side in visualizing and clarifying their objectives. More information and registration to the event is available in

10.00-12.00 PhD graduates in the private sector – a speaker event, (Think Lounge, Yliopistonkatu 4)

  • Doctoral studies build valuable expertise, but career paths beyond academia can often feel unclear. What opportunities exist in the private sector, and how can PhD skills be translated into industry roles? This speaker event is focused on PhD graduates working in the private sector. Inspiring speakers with doctoral backgrounds will share their career journeys, insights, and practical advice for doctoral researchers exploring non-academic paths. .

13.00-15.00 Informal interview – 1-on-1 discussions with PhD graduates in the working life, (Think Nook, Yliopistonkatu 4)

  • Exploring career paths after a PhD can feel uncertain, but learning directly from those who have already made the transition can provide valuable clarity and inspiration. This informal networking event offers doctoral researchers the opportunity to engage in facilitated one-on-one discussions with PhD graduates who are already established in working life. Through a “mentor carousel” format, participants will meet multiple professionals, gaining diverse perspectives on career paths, transitions, and opportunities beyond academia. .

17.00-19.00 Final round of Three Minute Thesis competition, (Think Corner, Yliopistonkatu 4)

We will end the week on Thursday with the PhD Summerfest!
