The Department of Biosciences situated at the Viikki science park belongs to the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences of University of Helsinki and is the largest research and teaching unit in biosciences in Finland. The Department of Biosciences is one of the largest departments of Helsinki University with its c. 25 million euro budget and over 400 staff members.
The Department of Biosciences invites applications for a
for the period of 1.10.2017 – 30.9.2018 (the starting date can be negotiated).
The successful candidate will join a large interdisciplinary effort to work on integral membrane pyrophosphatases (Kellosalo et al., Science, 337:473-476 (2012); Li et al. & Goldman Nat Commun 7, 13596 (2016)), to develop drugs against diseases like malaria and African sleeping sickness.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Cloning in E. coli
- Membrane Protein production in E. coli and/or yeast (S. cerevisiae)
- Transfer to baculovirus
- Maintenance of eukaryotic cell systems (insect cells like Sf9, Hi5; mammalian cells like HEK293)
- Membrane protein production in insect cell/baculovirus
- Membrane protein purification
- Enzyme inhibition assays
- General management of the laboratory
All of the work above will be performed under the direction of postdoctoral researchers in the group, with the Professor Goldman as the line manager.
The successful candidate must:
1) hold an MSc or equivalent degree in biochemistry, molecular biology or a related field, or equivalent long-term laboratory experience,
2) have documented experience working on eukaryotic/challenging protein production and purification on the mg scale and/or in functional and enzymatic assays,
3) have documented ability to multitask
4) have documented experience in working to deadlines
Experience in scaling up production procedures will be a plus.
Previous experience in a structural biology laboratory will be a plus.
The candidate should be fluent in at least one of English and Finnish, and preferably both.
The salary is based on level 5 of the job requirement scheme for other personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The gross monthly salary will be between 2100 € and 2600 € depending on the applicant’s experience and skills. The position is offered with a four-month trial period.
