The Department of Chemistry ( at the Faculty of Science carries out research on chemistry and its applications at an international level and provides academic teaching based on high quality research. The department forms accountability unit operating on an annual budget of 19 million euros and reports 200 person-years per annum. There are 14 professors at the Department.

The research performed in the Materials Chemistry Laboratory (previously Laboratory of Organic Chemistry) at the Department of Chemistry is of highest international level. The research topics in the current call are related to biomass refining and materials science, covering work from organic synthesis to spectroscopy and materials characterization.

positions. Starting date is negotiable. The positions will be filled with a 4-month trial period.

The position is available in the research group led by Professor Ilkka Kilpeläinen and Dr. Alistair King. The group is concentrating on biomass (especially cellulose) dissolution, fractionation, regeneration, derivatization and characterization, mainly using ionic liquids (or electrolyte solutions) as key platform technology. The work of employees will focus on the synthesis of novel IL structures and their application in various fields of materials chemistry and physics.

The candidates are is expected to be creative and highly motivated, with a PhD degree (post-doc positions) or M.Sc. (doctorate positions) in chemistry, physics, or related fields. Proven expertise, estimated by success in Ph.D. studies (doctorate) or scientific articles (post-doc) are required. Work experience on synthetic organic chemistry and/or on topics related to ionic liquids and biomass refining are highly appreciated, especially in connection with technical skills. Good English language (oral and written) skills are required.

The salary will be in accordance with the University salary system (for teaching and research personnel), where level 5 is for a postdoctoral researcher and levels 2-4 for doctorates. In addition, the appointees will be paid a salary component based on personal performance.
