Academy professor Craig Primmer’s research group at the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences and the Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki invites applications for

RESEARCH TECHNICIAN: ATLANTIC SALMON STOCK MAINTENANCE

for the period of 15.5.2018-31.12.2019.

The group is looking to employ a full time research technician to help in our research on salmon evolutionary genomics. The position involves maintaining experimental Atlantic salmon stocks on the Viikki campus (general fish husbandry tasks). Specific duties include:
- cleaning of tanks, pipes, and drains and routine measuring water quality (temperature, oxygen, pH, ammonium, nitrate, nitrite)
- maintenance of automatic feeding systems and manual feeding when necessary
- monitoring, adjusting, and maintaining two re-circulation water systems (water level, biofilter, water temperature, etc.)
- assisting with fish measurement and sample-taking
- occasionally assisting in maintenance of salmon stocks at the Lammi field station.

The successful candidate should be highly motivated and have experience and/or training in fish (or other aquatic species) husbandry. Experience with re-circulating water systems and associated skills for monitoring water-quality parameters is also advantageous, as is having a valid EU-approved animal experimentation license. The successful candidate is also expected to have good skills in using basic computing programs. We also appreciate a cooperative attitude and enthusiasm for learning new skills. The candidate should have good communication skills. Much of the communication in the research group is in English as the research group is primarily non-Finnish speaking, however the PI speaks (relatively) fluent Finnish. Therefore, the ability to communicate freely in English is essential and speaking Finnish is also advantageous.

The salary is based on levels 5-8 of the job requirement scheme for other personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The gross monthly salary will be between 2150€ and 3000€ depending on the applicant’s experience and skills. The position is offered with a six-month trial period.

Applicants are requested to submit their application, preferably in English, as one single pdf file, which includes the following documents:
- CV including contact details for at least 2 referees
- motivation letter (max 1 page).

The application must be submitted through the University of Helsinki electronic recruitment system by clicking on Apply for job. Internal applicants (i.e., current employees of the University of Helsinki) must submit their applications through the SAP HR portal. The closing date for applications is 7.5.2018.
