The Faculty of Science invites applications for a

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER POSITION IN REMOTE SENSING OF FORESTS

starting in January 2019. The position is full-time until the end of August 2021 (a probation period applies). There will be the possibility of an extension for two more years (until August 2023 - total of 4.5 years). The starting date can be negotiated but preferably no later than March 2019.

The researcher will work on an exciting project funded by the Academy of Finland, aiming to understand the mechanisms leading to environmental changes in fragmented tropical forests (e.g. changes in canopy structure, microclimate and biodiversity). The project will collect data across multiple scales, starting with field measurements of microclimate data and high resolution laser scanning (using TLS), continuing at regional and global scales using satellite remote sensing data and ecosystem models. The final goal is to delineate strategies for mitigating biodiversity loss in forests located in regions heavily pressured by anthropogenic activities.

The researcher will have the opportunity to work in collaboration with a team of internationally renowned researchers worldwide. The project foresees field work in the Brazilian Amazon, East Africa and Southeast Asia. Furthermore, there is the possibility for research visits abroad to strengthen collaboration with the project partners, which will give the postdoc the chance build her/his own collaboration network.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A SUITABLE CANDIDATE

A suitable candidate for the position must hold a doctoral degree in Remote Sensing, Geography, Forestry, Ecology or any relevant field. The successful candidate is expected to have extensive knowledge in applying remote sensing for assessing vegetation status, habitat degradation and environmental changes. Experience with LiDAR data is particularly desired. Availability to travel to different countries for field work and research visits is necessary.

Candidates with the following characteristics will be given preference:
• Expertise in the analysis of time series and large geospatial datasets
• Strong knowledge in programing for data analysis (e.g. R, python), particularly in dealing with geospatial datasets
• Basic relevant knowledge of forest ecology
• Solid knowledge on ecosystem processes (e.g. energy fluxes and water cycle)
• Previous experience in using Terrestrial Laser Scanning data is an advantage

Excellent written and spoken communications skills in English are essential.

The salary will be in accordance with the University´s salary system (for teaching and research personnel), where level 5 is for a postdoctoral researcher. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The starting salary will be approximately 3300 – 3550 €/month.
