The Faculty of Arts is a significant international community fostering research, education and cultural interaction. The Faculty has 7,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students and employs 500 experts. The Department of Languages is one of the six departments of the faculty, specializing in over 20 languages spoken in Europe and elsewhere.

We are looking for candidates with a background in linguistics, history or digital humanities, or some combination of these. The candidate would work in a research project focusing on the late modern period up to the first half of the twentieth century, actively collaborating with the research project members and participating in joint publications. Expertise in the use of computational methods in linguistic or historical research as well as familiarity with the period should be shown in the research plan.

The successful candidate will become part of DEMLANG, a research consortium between the University of Helsinki and the University of Tampere, which studies the interrelatedness of the sociocultural processes of democratization and mediatization and changes in language practices in Britain (1700–1950). The consortium aims to discover mechanisms operating in the bidirectional relationship between sociocultural change and language change, focusing on linguistic features that carry indexical meanings on different levels of discourse. The research is based on various corpora and other text collections. The successful candidate will carry out research on these data, using methods of corpus linguistics and other suitable methods of digital humanities. The research community in Helsinki offers good opportunities for collaboration, both within the university and internationally. The candidate’s own research plan should reflect the aims of the research project. More specific objectives for the position and forms of collaboration will be discussed during the possible interview of the candidate. Duties of postdoctoral researcher include normal participation in teaching at the Faculty (5-10%) and academic service.

An appointee must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline, the ability to conduct independent scientific research and possess the teaching skills required for the position. In addition, the candidates are expected to have excellent skills in English.

The salary shall be based on level 5 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research staff in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance will be paid. The annual salary range will be approx. 41,000 EUR – 50,000 EUR (gross income). In addition, occupational health care will be provided.
