Pro­fess­ors of prac­tice

A holder of a doctoral degree with professional merits and experience of particular significance from outside the academic world that can benefit the University may be invited to the position of professor of practice. Professors of practice always work part time (typically 20–50%) in addition to their regular duties. The goal is for professors of practice to strengthen the University’s community relations and visibility. 

The position of professor of practice is filled by invitation. Since the position is not based on academic merit, no assessment procedure will be used in the appointment process. Professors of practice are not considered to be professorial staff.

Kaarlo Simojoki, DMed, is the CEO and medical director of A-Clinic Ltd with special qualifications in addiction medicine. In 2013, Simojoki completed his doctoral degree in medicine at the University of Helsinki. Simojoki is a well-known expert of the field and an active social contributor with extensive domestic and international networks in the field of addiction medicine. 

The Faculty of Medicine has invited Kaarlo Simojoki to the position of professor of practice in addiction medicine commencing on 1 July 2018 (five years, 35%).  

The position of professor of practice in addiction medicine is funded by a donation from Alko Oy.

Outi Ihanainen-Rokio, DPhil, works in a consulting business she established herself. She has experience in serving as a marketing and communication expert for technology companies. Ihanainen-Rokio defended her doctoral dissertation on organisational communication, in addition to which she has experience in teaching the subject in institutions of higher education.

The Faculty of Social Sciences has invited Outi Ihanainen-Rokio to the position of professor of practice in organisational communication with an emphasis on business communication commencing on 1 August 2018 (three years, 30%).

The position of professor of practice in organisational communication is funded partly by donations. The largest donors include ProCom – the Finnish Association of Communication Professionals, the Economic Information Office TAT, the Finnish Fair Foundation, the Juho and Lempi Pitkänen Fund and Nokia. The rest of the funding is provided by the University of Helsinki Faculty of Social Sciences.

Docent Timo Kaisanlahti, LLD, M.Sc. (Econ), works as the chief legal counsel of the Varma Mutual Pension Insurance Company. He holds a doctorate in law and works as a docent of law and economics at the University of Eastern Finland.

The Faculty of Law has invited Timo Kaisanlahti to the position of professor of practice in financial statements law commencing on 1 January 2018 (five years, 20%).

Tuomas Lehtinen, LLD, is a partner at Castrén & Snellman Attorneys Ltd. Holding a doctorate in law, Lehtinen has been appointed to a docentship in contract law and international trade law at the University of Turku. He has extensive experience in dispute proceedings both in the courts and in arbitration institutes.

The Faculty of Law has invited him to the position of professor of practice in legal practice law commencing on 1 January 2018 (five years, 50%).

The position of professor of practice in legal practice law is funded partly by the Finnish Bar Association Foundation and the Finnish Bar Association.

Docent Petri Peltonen, DPhil, is an expert in economic geology and mineralogy. Peltonen works as the managing director of Aurora Exploration, a Finnish company specialised in ore exploration. He has extensive experience in both research in geology and mineralogy, as well as in the industry.

The Faculty of Science has invited Petri Peltonen to the position of professor of practice in economic geology commencing on 1 November 2017 (five years, 50%).

Pekka Sauri, PhD, has long-term experience working as a politician and official, with prior service as a deputy mayor of Helsinki. He is currently working as an advisor to the communications firm Tekir and Aalto University Executive Education.

The Faculty of Social Sciences has invited Pekka Sauri to the position of professor of practice in organisational communication commencing on 23 October 2017 (three years, 80%). He is specialising in societal communication.

The position of professor of practice in organisational communication is funded partly by donations. The largest donors include ProCom – the Finnish Association of Communication Professionals, the Economic Information Office TAT, the Finnish Fair Foundation, the Juho and Lempi Pitkänen Fund and Nokia.
