Helsinki Normal Lyceum provides basic education for grades 1-3 and 7–9 as well as general upper secondary education. Comprehensive school grades 7–9 share facilities and teachers with the general upper secondary school at the Normal Lyceum. Studying in basic education takes place according to the national core curriculum drawn up in 2014.
Basic education pupils are admitted based on their school admission area from southern Helsinki, except for the Latin class for which pupils are admitted based on a separate aptitude test.
Admission for grade 1
Compulsory education starts in autumn term 2020 for children born in 2014.
Helsinki Normal Lyceum admits approximately 20 pupils for the 1st grade primarily from the school’s school admission area.
Parents or guardians can register their children for the school electronically when their local school is the Helsinki Normal Lyceum. The compulsory education letter provides detailed instructions on how to register electronically.
You can also register on site at the Helsinki Normal Lyceum (Ratakatu 6B, entrance through the courtyard, ground floor) at the end of January (specific date will be announced later). Those applying for a place at the Helsinki Normal Lyceum from outside the school admission area must fill in an application in person at the school during the above times. When registering, you must have with you the compulsory education notification, which includes information on the local school based on the child’s home address.
Language programme/grades 1–6
A1 language The A1 languages offered by the Helsinki Normal Lyceum are English and French for all pupils starting from 1st grade.
Optional A2 language At the Helsinki Normal Lyceum French or English can also be studied as an A2 language starting in 3rd grade.
An information event for the parents of future first-graders will be held in on 14 January 2021 at 18.00. Details on the event (online or at school) will be announced later.

The school admission area for grades 7–9 comprises the school admission areas of the Snellman and Tehtaankatu primary schools. If a pupil lives and is registered at an address in the aforementioned area all through secondary school, their local school is the Helsinki Normal Lyceum.
Pupils in 6th grades of city of Helsinki's schools enroll to secondary school via Wilma (browser version) during 16th November to 15th December 2020.
Pupils for the Latin class are admitted based on an aptitude test. The test is an examination in the pupil’s native language. Pupils in city of Helsinki's schools enroll via Wilma, pupils of other cities or schools enroll via en electronic form (https://www.hel.fi/kasvatuksen-ja-koulutuksen-toimiala/fi/palvelut/lomakkeet/ >Perusopetus > Kuudesluokkalaiset > Ulkopaikkakuntalaisten ilmoittautumislomake soveltuvuuskokeeseen, in Finnish), which must be submitted to the office of the Helsinki Normal Lyceum’s comprehensive school (lotta.sjoblom(at)helsinki.fi) or by mail (Helsingin normaalilyseo, PL 38 (Ratakatu 6), 00014 Helsingin yliopisto) by Tuesday, 15 December 2020.
The test will take place in the auditorium of the Helsinki Normal Lyceum (A107) on Thursday, 21 January 2021 from 12.00 to 15.00. No separate invitation for the test will be sent. Only the score from the aptitude test will play a role in the admission to the Latin class.
All admission decisions will be mailed to pupils' homes by the end of March.
Admission for other basic education grades
We will accept pupils only from our school admission area for grades 2, 3, 8 and 9.
