We Finns think Helsinki is without a doubt the best city in the world, but why should you move here to study and experience the capital of Finland? Well, here are a couple of good reasons!
10 reasons to study in Helsinki
Where else in the world do you have the possibility to live in a buzzing city center, but when in need of an outdoor adventure, just pack your tent, take a bus, and find yourself surrounded by untouched nature? Or better yet – live in peaceful surroundings but still be a stone’s throw from where the magic happens? Helsinki has the advantages of a big city in a smaller and compact package in many ways. In the city center, you can easily get from A to B by foot or by a brand new yellow city bike, but the city is also well covered by public transportation. And when comparing to big cities, you can hardly call a rush hour in Helsinki a real traffic jam.
Urban planning in Helsinki is truly marvelous. We are not probably lying if we say that Helsinki has at least one park or a green area in every part of the city. Thanks to nature (and the fact that there’s only a handful of people in Finland) the quality of the air we breathe is really good. Nature is also present in many other ways than public city parks. Helsinki is home to many beautiful and easily accessible nature trails where you can take a walk, relax and make your lunch on an open fire, or go kayaking to the lovely archipelago that is so dear to many Helsinkians. Did you know that on one of the campuses of the University of Helsinki you can actually go for a walk and see cows and horses surrounded by glowing green fields? Pretty awesome!
There are thousands of universities in the world, and the University of Helsinki is proud to be constantly ranked among the top one hundred best universities. According to the latest Times Higher Education World University Ranking, the University of Helsinki retained its position as the best multidisciplinary university in the Nordic countries. We are better than 99.9% of the rest, so by studying with us you can become one of the best too!
When designing the University Helsinki campuses the students have truly been kept in mind. The public areas are functional yet inspiring. For example, the main library in Kaisaniemi with its comfy couches and armchairs is frankly so appealing to the students that some even camp outside to get the best places to study! Haha, well, maybe we are exaggerating just a teeny tiny bit. But really, you will have to be there pretty early if you want to earn one of the best seats. Experience the best studying environment there is!
Helsinki is one of the safest cities in the world to live in. We have a fabulously functioning democracy, reasonably stable economy, advanced transportation systems and no risk of natural disasters. Come and see it yourselves!
