Are you interested in international issues, politics of diversity and the challenges of foreign reporting? Do you study Journalism or Communication? Then the following program from September to December 2018 is something you have to experience!
The 15 ECTS Foreign Reporting program is both a theoretical and practical program aimed at providing Journalism and/or Communication students with the conceptual framework and the practical skills needed to work as a foreign reporter on assignment. The courses emphasize international journalism, multiculturalism and ethnicity. The program is taught by experts in the field and it includes a working assignment abroad. The program consists of the three courses listed below.
Foreign Reporting as a minor (25-30 ECTS) consists of the courses mentioned below. In addition, courses can be added to the minor up to a total of 30 ECTS. The minor gives the student insights into working as a foreign reporter with the added knowledge on how to apply this expertise in a changing media landscape. Exchange students staying the whole autumn term can choose additional classes up to 30 ECTS even if they do not take part in the minor.
MEDIA LANDSCAPES AND JOURNALISM IN TRANSITION, 5 ECTS
The course will focus on the differences between types of media, including professional news media and social media; the new diversity in media platforms and outlets, and its consequences for journalism; and media policies and their underpinning expectations in regard to relations between media and democracy, and the tensions between actors in the media market.
MEDIA AND DIVERSITY, 5 ECTS
This course will give the students the ability to critically assess the way in which multiculturalism and diversity are discussed in media representations, political discourse, and consumer culture in the context of interactive and networked media.
FOREIGN REPORTING IN PRACTICE, 5 ECTS
The course includes theory and practice of foreign reporting, using Finland as a laboratory environment. An intensive introduction to the target area (Baltic States with emphasis on Estonia) is provided before starting the practical assignment. The students travel to Estonia on a working assignment which will result in a report for newspaper, radio or television.
Application and criteria for acceptance
16-18 students of Journalism and/or Communication are recruited through an admission process. Students are recruited nationally and internationally from the partner universities of the Swedish School of Social Science.
The program has no tuition fee.
The program is aimed at students on the level of Advanced Bachelor.
The participants are expected to have good English skills and some academic or practical experience in journalism or communication. Exchange and visiting students applying for the program are kindly asked to include the program in their learning agreement when applying.
A compulsory orientation course for international students is organized at the start of term in the end of August/ beginning of September.
