World’s first professorship in sustainable development in pharmacy at the University of Helsinki – Making Finland a global pioneer in the field
The Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Helsinki is assuming a leading role in research and education pertaining to the environmental effects of pharmacy by establishing a professorship in sustainable development in pharmacy, the first of its kind anywhere in the world.
The chemical burden caused by drug residues on the environment and resistance to antibiotics pose specific challenges to both humanity and the environment’s capacity to withstand these negative effects. However, environmental damage can be effectively mitigated in all stages of the manufacturing and life cycles of pharmaceutical products.
Through its integration of pharmacy and environmental expertise, the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Helsinki has been a pioneer in this area. Its students attain solid practical expertise in pharmacy combined with top-level research and advanced understanding in sustainable development.
The new professorship will establish sustainable development as an integral part of the research and teaching themes in the field of pharmacy. A research group to be established around the professorship will bring together researchers from the field and produce new kinds of research of a high standard, the ground for which was laid by the work of the Generation Green project group.
Sustainable development is one of the strong points of the University of Helsinki, enabled by wide-ranging and multidisciplinary top-level research and teaching. The Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS), part of the University, also provides its robust expertise for the special challenges found in pharmacy.
Our society needs top-level experts with a deep understanding of the environmental effects of pharmacy and their prevention. We need a professor specialised in sustainable development in pharmacy to make the research and education conducted in the field the best in the world. The professorship and the associated research group will put together a team of researchers in the field to embed the principles of sustainable development into all aspects of research and teaching in pharmacy.
