You have applied to a master’s programme of the University of Helsinki as a not-yet-graduated student. You have now been awarded a conditional right to study for a master’s degree at the University of Helsinki. In order to confirm your right to study, you have to prove your eligibility.

You must submit an officially certified copy of your final degree certificate and of your transcript of records to the Admission Services by the deadline given to you in the e-mail with the title "University of Helsinki offers you a study place". Please see your personal deadline in the e-mail under the title "Prove your eligibility for Master's studies". Please note that other applicants may have been asked to follow different instructions.

Attention! Please note! If you have gained admisson

  • to the Faculty of Arts
  • to the Faculty of Social Sciences
  • to the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences

you only have to submit an officially certified copy of your degree certificate.

Please note that the educational documents you submit to confirm your right to study must include all the required information, they must be officially certified and they must be accompanied by authorized translations if not awarded originally in English, Finnish or Swedish. Also, please make sure that your documents are submitted according to the country-specific requirements if that is required.

Please read carefully the instructions below and submit officially certified copies of your final educational documents by the given deadline.

Please note that all the deadlines and opening hours announced in these instructions are in Finnish local time.

Degree certificate

A degree certificate is a document issued by an institution to a student who has successfully completed all studies included in the degree: the student has graduated.

The degree certificate should include the name of the institution awarding the degree, the date of issue, the name of the person to whom the degree certificate has been issued, and which title or degree the person has been awarded.

A temporary (or provisional) degree certificate is a document issued by an institution to a student who has successfully completed all studies included in the degree. Also in this case, the student has already graduated and he/she has been awarded a degree. The temporary degree certificate is issued as a replacement for the actual degree certificate, for example, if the final degree certificate cannot be given to the student immediately due to technical or administrative reasons.

Also the temporary degree certificate should include the name of the institution awarding the degree, the date of issue, the name of the person to whom the degree certificate has been issued and which title or degree the person has been awarded.

Transcript of records

A transcript of records is a document issued by the same institution that has issued the degree certificate or the temporary degree certificate. When confirming your right to study in Helsinki, you must submit your final transcript of records.

The transcript of records should include all the course units that you have completed for the degree, their completion time and the grades and credits awarded. It should also include information on the grading scale used at the institution at the time of study. If the degree includes course units that you have completed in another institution and the transferred credits are not indicated in detail in the transcript of records, a separate transcript of records regarding the transferred credits should be delivered. Please note that if we have already received the information about your transferred credits earlier, there is no need to submit it again.

All educational documents must be officially certified (attested) by the Notary Public or the awarding institution (please also note the country-specific requirements below). This means that every page of each document must bear an original stamp/seal and signature of the certifying officer, e.g. regular copies of certified copies will not be accepted.

Please make sure that the officially certified copies:

  • are taken directly from your original educational documents
  • include every page of your educational documents
  • bear the original stamp of the awarding institution or Notary Public on each page of the document (e.g. a stamp stating only “Certified true copy” will not be accepted)
  • bear the original signature of the certifying officer

All documents should be submitted in English, Finnish, or Swedish. The translations of educational documents (or their copies) must satisfy one of the conditions listed below:

  • The translations are issued by the awarding institution.
  • The translations are officially certified copies of the translations issued by the awarding institution.
  • The translations are translated by an authorized translator.
  • The translations are officially certified copies of the translations made by an authorized translator.

Each page of an authorized translation must bear the translator’s stamp and/or signature. Authorized translations must be exact translations of the original documents. Translations done by the applicant are not accepted.

All authorized copies of translations must bear the authentic stamp of the institution that issued the document or a notary public. See also the Country-specific requirements section.

All educational documents must be officially certified either by the awarding institution or by a notary public. However, note that there are country-specific document requirements in place for some degree-awarding countries. Applicants, whose degrees have been awarded in certain countries, need to pay special attention to the documentation. In addition to the standard document requirements, educational documents from certain countries must be submitted in a particular way. These country-specific requirements must be always followed first and foremost, prior to any regular requirements for attesting documents.

Follow the country-specific requirements, if your degree has been awarded in one of the countries listed on the Country-specific requirements page.

Please note that it is on applicant’s own responsibility to make sure the documents are delivered within the given deadline. University of Helsinki does not accept documents submitted by email or fax. We strongly recommend that the applicants deliver their documents by mail / courier service.

If your degree is from the University of Helsinki

If the degree you have used as basis for eligibility in your application has been awarded by the University of Helsinki, we are able to verify your degree from the University’s Oodi-service and there is no need to send us paper copies of your educational documents. However, please let us know via e-mail (admissions@helsinki.fi) that you have graduated and that the information on your graduation has been registered to Oodi or that it will be registered soon. Please tell us also your student number. If you graduate near to your personal deadline, you should still let us know via e-mail and if needed, we will verify the graduation directly from your faculty.

If the documents you have submitted meet the requirements

When we have received and processed your educational documents that confirm your right to study at the University of Helsinki, we will inform you via e-mail. However, please note, that this is only a confirmation that your documents have arrived and that they meet the requirements. Later you will receive an official e-mail confirming your right to study. Please note that you also have to register as an attending or non-attending student.

Please note that due to the great amount of documents we receive, it is unlikely that we would be able to process your documents on their arrival day. It can take time to process your documents, so please avoid inquiring if your documents have arrived or if they have been processed. We will inform you when this has been done.

If the documents you have submitted do not meet the requirements

If you have sent us your educational documents but their content does not meet the requirements, they are not officially certified or do not meet the country-specific requirements, we will inform you via e-mail. You have time until your personal deadline to submit the documents the right way. If the correct documents do not arrive on time, we unfortunately have to inform you of the loss of place offered to you at the University of Helsinki.
