Accepted to study at the University of Helsinki? On this page we explain how you enroll as a new student.
Exchange students are automatically enrolled at the University of Helsinki once they have been accepted to study at UH.
For exchange students the Student Union fee is voluntary, but it is highly recommendable that you register for the Student Union membership. By paying the Student Union fee, you have access to the student health care services (this does not apply to doctoral students) and can order a student card (the cost is 15.10 euros) etc. For banking details and benefits of the Student Union membership, please see the membership fees.
Once you have been officially accepted as a visiting student, you will be automatically enrolled as an attending student by the date of the beginning of your study right. If you have not applied for the visiting student status before your arrival at the University of Helsinki, the enrolment may take up to two weeks. If you are not able to attend the orientation and welcome fair, please make sure to read carefully the instructions for late arrivals that you receive in the acceptance letter. Most importantly fill in and sign the IT user account form you find a link to in the late arrivals' instructions. The form should be sent to the International Exchange Services (studentexchange(at)helsinki.fi) as soon as possible.
The Admissions Services of the University of Helsinki will send you enrolment instructions by e-mail. The subject of the e-mail message is "University of Helsinki offers you a study place". Please follow these instructions very carefully. You can get a rough idea of the enrolment procedure by acquainting yourself with the First steps of a new student.
The completion of the enrolment is crucial because no official certification of your studies can be issued by the university before that. As a degree student you will receive the official certification from the Student Registrar in regular mail or by visiting the Welcome Fair. Exchange and visiting students will get the certification at the Welcome Fair. It is also possible to get the certification by visiting the Student Services.
The official certification of your studies is compulsory when you are applying for a permanent address in Helsinki. All students, whose degree studies last at least for two years, can be registered as permanent residents of the municipality.
When enrolling you should provide your current address. If you move to a new address later on, you should make a notice of moving to the university. This can be made by email to the Student Services. When you have your username and password for the UH networks, you can do it yourself in WebOodi database system.
