International students are strongly advised to learn at least the basics of either Finnish or Swedish – preferably at the beginning of their studies. Language studies in either Finnish or Swedish are also part of the degree requirements in some faculties. Check the language requirements from your faculty for detailed information.
More information on Finnish courses is available on the New Students Website and on the Finnish for International Students page.
The Swedish for international students courses are arranged by the Language Centre. For more information, please see the Language Centre website.
The Language Centre also offers courses in several other languages. On many of the courses the supporting language of instruction is Finnish. Courses suitable for international students are listed on the Language Centre website.
You can also study various languages in the self-access facilities of the Language Centre: you can choose from over 40 languages. Studies are carried out with the help of self-access staff and language tutors – choosing your own materials, schedule and pace.
