We develop our science education based on research. The University of Helsinki has several ongoing multidisciplinary research projects which relate to science education. Pursuant to the University’s Strategic Plan, many of them connect to global challenges, such as the research-based development of climate change education and sustainable development education, or to topics which are otherwise important for the future of Finland, such as bioeconomy, circular economy and digitalisation. LumA Science Education Centre coordinates these research projects at the University.

Most of the research is carried out using methodologies of design-based research (DBR). This results in both new theories and practical innovations, which increases the impact of the research.
