The panel brings together specialists in the taxation of Hellenistic Egypt, Sicily, the Levant and Anatolia, covering four important monarchies of this period (the Ptolemies, Hiero's Syracusan kingdom, the Seleucids, and the Pontic kingdom). The approaches of the papers draw on a variety of papyrological, epigraphic, literary, and archaeological evidence.
Dr. Mitchka Shahriyari's presentation, Achaemenid and Hellenistic Taxation in the Aramaic Ostraca from Idumea, explores the fiscal structures of the Southern Levant during the transition from Achaemenid to Hellenistic rule. Drawing on a corpus of around 2,000 Aramaic ostraca, she examines how administrative and taxation systems evolved, highlighting potential continuities and shifts in institutional practices. The research sheds light on the region’s fiscal framework and its connections to broader imperial structures.
