RADIA participates in the NUORA project

RADIA is involved in the NUORA project, which aims to produce a multidimensional, research-based understanding of youth radicalization, gang formation, and recruitment into criminal activity and violent extremism in Finland

The NUORA project has received funding under the Finnish Government’s “Tutkiva hanke” research funding programme for the period from April 2026 to February 2027. In addition to RADIA, the project consortium includes E2 Research, the Police University College, Tampere University, and the Institute of Criminology and Legal Policy.

Key objectives of the NUORA project

• to conceptualize and deepen understanding of the interconnections between youth violent radicalization, extremism, gang formation, and other forms of criminal activity, as well as the individual, social, and structural factors associated with these phenomena

• to identify risk factors, vulnerabilities, and recruitment processes, particularly from the perspective of minors and other vulnerable young people, including within digital environments

• to examine internationally researched prevention and intervention practices and assess how experiences, operational models, and solutions from other countries can be contextualized and, where appropriate, applied in Finland

• to provide up-to-date, research-based knowledge to support decision-making and strategic governance, thereby strengthening anticipation, comprehensive assessment, and the development of evidence-based national policies

The NUORA project brings together interconnected phenomena that have previously been examined separately. The knowledge produced in the project will be communicated to decision-makers and public authorities in a clear and applicable format. The work supports the national situational awareness framework and contributes to the prevention of youth radicalization, gang formation, and recruitment into criminal activity in Finland.
