Overview of the ‘Implementing "Fit for 55"’ Conference

The INTERTRAN Research Group is an interdisciplinary research group for sustainable law and business.

The group’s central idea is to contribute to sustainable development while maintaining a strong focus on a sustainable circular economy, international transport and global value chains. Particular attention is paid to the role of transport in sustainable development, but also other aspects of sustainable business are of interest.

Currently, the research group is strengthening its cooperation with the Nordic shipping industry.

In collaboration with the Finnish Swedish Chamber of Commerce (FINSVE), the research group is organizing a two-day conference titled ‘Implementing “Fit for 55” – The right Logistics and Transport Infrastructure for a Net Zero-Carbon Future – The Nordics at the Helm?’ to take place in Helsinki on the 24th and 25th of August 2022.

The “Fit for 55” package is a set of proposals to update and revise EU legislation in order to achieve the goals set out in the Green Deal. The name refers to the goal of reducing emissions by 55% by 2030.

The first day of the two-day conference will be dedicated to the Nordic shipping industry and the practical influence of the “Fit for 55” package, and it will feature presentations by invited participants. The second day will be an academic conference featuring the following topics:

  1. Climate Change – challenges and opportunities
  2. Creating a sustainable physical infrastructure
  3. Operational efforts towards net zero-carbon emissions in logistics and transport
  4. Green financial instruments and economic incentives towards a net zero-carbon future
  5. Digitalization of transport and mobility

We invite submissions of extended abstracts of no more than 500 words (Deadline Monday June 20th, 2022).

The conference will take place at the City Center campus of University of Helsinki, at Unioninkatu 33.
