This year’s lecture will be given by Dr. Lauri Railas on the topic of:
Brexit is scheduled to take place on 29 March 2019. It will probably have an immediate impact on dispute settlement. The Nordic countries have recently established their own maritime and offshore arbitration mechanism NOMA. There exist common Nordic marine insurance terms as well as freight forwarding conditions and the maritime and commercial laws are practically identical. The lecture will discuss some common ground of Nordic law and practice such as the role of gross negligence and insuring delay, and whether the Nordic approaches could set a viable alternative to the predominant English ones.
Following the lecture by Dr. Railas, comments will be given by Dr. Svante O. Johansson and Herman Ljungberg.
The evening will conclude with a small reception.

Dr. Lauri Railas is an attorney, the Average Adjuster in Finland and an Adjunct Professor (Docent) in Civil Law at the University of Helsinki. Lauri went the Nordic Way back in 1985 at the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law, but continued to London for an LL.M. a year later. Last August, Lauri published the first handbook on the Nordic freight forwarding conditions NSAB 2015. Lauri is expected to address some Nordic common ground in transport and trade law as well as marine insurance as compared to predominant English law and practices.
Svante O. Johansson (b. 1960) holds a Master of Laws degree from Lund University, Sweden. He practiced law in different state courts and was appointed associate judge of the Court of Appeal in 1992. He also has been working as legal adviser to the Ministry of Justice.
Svante O. Johansson was in 1998 appointed Average Adjuster of Sweden and was the President of the International Association of Average Adjusters (AMD) from 2007 to 2009.
After research studies at the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law, Oslo University, Svante O. Johansson was graduated LL.D. at University of Gothenburg in 2001. In 2005 he was appointed full professor and held the Torsten Pettersson Chair in Maritime and Transportation Law until 2011. He was Professor II (adjunct) at the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law, Oslo University 2007–2011.
Svante O. Johansson was appointed Justice to the Supreme Court of Sweden in 2011.
Attorney Herman Ljungberg has graduated from the University of Helsinki in 1993. Since then he has practised maritime and transport law in Finland. He has studied at the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law. In addition to his practical experience of pleading of maritime and transport cases, he is a dedicated follower of maritime and transport law issues in general.
