Policy brief for biodiversity monitoring

REC proposes a set of measures to support the strategic planning of biodiversity monitoring in Finland

Biodiversity monitoring and the information that originates from it are fundamental to evaluate how human activities affect biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, and in turn to develop better policies that can effectively support and maintain biodiversity. While Finland already holds one of the most extensive biodiversity observational datasets in the world, information across different groups is often disconnected or inadequate to answer the increasing number of questions linked to environmental and climate change.

REC has looked into these extensive data to identify ways to support Finland moving towards strategic and integrated planning of biodiversity monitoring. In the policy brief, REC highlights the importance of increasing temporal and spatial coverage of the monitoring, extending monitoring to all species groups and synchronizing the monitoring of multiple groups spatially, as well as ensuring that the resulting data is open and well documented.
