Dead-line for applications: 3 June 2019

ReNEW announces a targeted call for mobility and workshop grants at Copenhagen Business School and Södertörn University (both mobility and workshops), Aarhus University (mobility only) and University of Oslo (workshops only). Eligible applicants are researchers at all stages of their careers, including PhD students and affiliated researchers, working in these above-mentioned universities. Mobility grants are available for research stays in the ReNEW partner universities, in ReNEW’s strategic international partners, and where relevant, in other universities or departments that are engaged in research relevant to ReNEW. Funding is applied for on a competitive basis. Applicants must be doing research within the themes of ReNEW:

  • Nordic cooperation and region-building;
  • Democracy, governance and law;
  • Public policy, gender equality and labour markets;
  • Imagining Norden - branding and Nordic reputation;
  • Multiculturalism and globalization;
  • Nordic culture, education and media.

Mobility grants

ReNEW mobility is intended to intensify research collaboration and exchange of scholars. The grants are available for research stays in the ReNEW partner universities (Aarhus University, Copenhagen Business School, Södertörn University, University of Helsinki, University of Iceland, University of Oslo), in ReNEW’s strategic international partners (listed below), and where relevant, in other universities or departments that are engaged in research relevant to ReNEW.

Mobility grants are available for research stays from two weeks to 12 months. Mobility grants cover travel and accommodation costs, but not salary. Grant recipients must comply with the administrative rules for travel of the granting university. The receiving institution commits to provide a work-related infrastructure, and to facilitate integration of mobility candidates into the academic community.

The criteria against which applicants for mobility grant are assessed:

  • Potential to produce high quality research within the themes of ReNEW during the research stay;
  • Relevance of host institution (especially host scholar) for the research stay;
  • Contribution to seminars and/or other events, including teaching and public outreach, at the host institution;
  • Intention to participate in other ReNEW activities, such as annual conferences;
  • Possibilities for synergies between the ReNEW partner institutions, key persons and ReNEW strategic partner universities (including Boston University, European University Institute, Fudan University, Harvard University and Sciences-Po).

Workshop grants

ReNEW workshops have multiple purposes, such as, to explore research ideas, to pursue on-going cooperation in the context of a joint publication, to fund smaller start-up projects, to contribute to outreach or other activities. Grant covers travel of participants, hosting of the workshop, meals during the workshop and other relevant costs. Grant recipients must comply with the administrative rules for events of the granting university. We expect workshops to most often take place at a ReNEW partner university. The workshop, as part of international research collaboration, should aim to include the most relevant scholars in a particular sub-field of relevance of ReNEW.

The following are the criteria for funding:

  • Contribution to high quality research within the themes of ReNEW as a result of the workshop;
  • The participants should preferably represent at least two universities within the ReNEW hub;
  • The short-term and long-term aim of the workshop should be specified, with an emphasis on contribution to the research field.

Review process

Mobility and workshop applications are reviewed by an advisory assessment committee, on the basis of the criteria specified above. In addition to the specific criteria for workshops and mobility, the quality of the proposed research and work plan for mobility/workshop, its relevance for the ReNEW agenda and the potential impact (research output and impact on the academic community and/or on broader society) are of high relevance in making the assessments. After the review by the advisory assessment committee, the final decision is made by the ReNEW steering group. This could be accept as is, conditional accept, reject. If accepted, the funding granted may be different from the funds applied for. The applicant will receive a response by the summer of 2019.

Important information

The workshop/mobility stay should be carried out in 2019/early 2020. Successful workshop applicants will be required to submit their preliminary workshop programme for publication on the ReNEW website. Moreover, successful workshop/mobility applicants are to submit a short report to the ReNEW steering group within one month after the workshop/mobility stay.

ReNEW funding should be acknowledged on the workshop call and programme. All research published following the workshop and mobility funding should refer to the supportive role of ReNEW.

In planning workshops and mobility stays, applicants are invited to consider how their activities might also generate content for nordics.info (the ReNEW website for outreach and public dissemination).
