We are a dynamic group of researchers with a strong focus on finding novel disease modifying therapies for neurodegerative diseases. Moreover, in today's science nobody works alone and we collaborate actively with other experts on an international and domestic level.
Dr. Timo is the PI of the PREP research team. He did already his M.Sc. and Ph.D. theses on PREP (in the University of Kuopio), so Timo has strong background on PREP research. Post doc periods in Helsinki, Belgium and USA teached Timo how to use different preclinical models of neurodegenerative diseases from protein level to animal models. His passion is to find a disease-modifying drug for currently unstoppable neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
Docent, senior researcher
Dr. Erik Wallen is the leader of PREP lab Medicinal Chemistry, and has 20 years experience on different medicinal chemistry projects. Erik was also involved with earlier PREP inhibitor development in University of Kuopio, so he really knows what PREP and PREP inhibitor compounds are about.
Dr. Johanna Uhari-Väänänen is the latest member of PREP lab. She did her PhD on alcohol addiction project in University of Helsinki, and will be now working with some novel models in neurodegenerative disases.
See Johanna's researcher page in researcher portal here.
Dr. Hengjing Cui joined to PREP lab at 2019 as a visiting post-doctoral researcher. She got her PhD in pharmacology at 2015 from Shangai Jiao Tong University, and will be now visiting for a year in PREP lab. Her project will clarify further the role of PREP in autophagy and intracellular signalling.
M.Sc. Tommi Kilpeläinen started as a PhD student at November 2016, and before that he performed his M.Sc. project in PREP lab and was working for a while as a research assistant. His project focuses on clarifying the effects of PREP inhibitor structures on protein aggregation, and Tommi works as a multitalent between medicinal chemistry and pharmacology.
Francesca has strong background in animal models of neurodegenerative diseases, and her main responsibility will be in vivo work in the Business Finland TUTLI project.
See Francesca's profile in UH research portal here.
M.Sc. Henri Pätsi is the most recent PhD student in PREP lab. He already made M.Sc. thesis in PREP lab at the beginning of 2018 and has worked as a research assistant after that prior to starting his PhD journey. Henri's project is to find novel PREP inhibitor structures.
Tony is currently the most recent member of PREP lab as he started working for his PhD in Business Finland project at the beginning of 2019.
Mikael Jumppanen, PhD, is an experienced medicinal chemist who gained his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Jari Yli-Kauhaluoma in the huge 3iRegeneration project. Mikael further streghtens the MedChem team of PREP lab.
See Mikael's research profile here.
M.Sc. Samuli Auno is a commercial champion in the Business Finland TUTLI project. His responsibilities in PREP lab is to take care of commercialization activities of TUTLI project together with Helsinki Innovation Services. Additionally, he conducts in vitro research activities for the project and handles social media accounts during his stay.
