I began my career working with fish to study parental effects, learning about epigenetic mechanisms through ecological and physiological lenses. I now extensively use genomic tools and data to study the ecological role of epigenetic mechanisms, and the forces that drive epigenetic variation. Intrinsically linked with epigenetic variation is genomic structural variation, including insertions, deletions, and large inversions. These structural variants can have major implications for adaptation, whether via their epigenetic influence or via other mechanisms, and are therefore another major focus of my research.
Juho has a background in forestry and quantitative genetics. For his doctoral research, he studies the role of DNA methylation in forest tree adaptation, including screening for epigenomic predictors of phenotypic traits via epigenome-wide association (EWAS) mapping.
