Diego Balboa and Others Contribute Chapter on Stem Cell-Derived Islet Therapy to Modern Diabetology

A chapter by Tom Barsby, Diego Balboa, and Timo Otonkoski has been published in Modern Diabetology: Basic Science and Clinical Practice. The chapter, Stem Cell-Derived Islet Therapy for Type 1 Diabetes, summarizes recent progress in generating transplantable islet cells from stem cells and discusses their potential for treating type 1 diabetes.

A new chapter authored by Tom Barsby, Diego Balboa, and Timo Otonkoski has been published in Modern Diabetology: Basic Science and Clinical Practice, a comprehensive reference work edited by Professor R. Paul Robertson and published by Elsevier. The chapter, "Stem Cell-Derived Islet Therapy for Type 1 Diabetes" (Chapter 25), reviews recent advances in the development of stem cell-based therapies aimed at restoring insulin production in people living with type 1 diabetes.

The publication highlights the long-standing research tradition in stem cell biology and diabetes research at the University of Helsinki. The chapter summarizes progress in generating functional pancreatic islet cells from human pluripotent stem cells, discusses the latest clinical developments in stem cell-derived islet transplantation, and examines the challenges that remain before these therapies can become widely available. It also explores emerging strategies to improve graft survival, function, and protection from immune-mediated destruction.

Modern Diabetology brings together internationally recognized experts to provide an up-to-date overview of diabetes research, from molecular mechanisms and genetics to complications and emerging therapies, serving as a resource for both researchers and clinicians.
