Obesity Research Unit has become a well-recognized knowledge center that plays a leading role in research as well as in the development and dissemination of information and education on obesity and the associated co-morbidities in Finland.

Obesity Research Unit is located in Biomedicum Helsinki 1 at the Meilahti campus for biomedical sciences of the University of Helsinki and is affiliated to the Research Program for Clinical and Molecular Medicine (CAMM) at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki. Obesity Research unit’s leader Professor Kirsi Pietiläinen is also a program director of the CAMM. Obesity Research Unit closely collaborates with the Obesity Center at the Helsinki University Hospital, the largest treatment unit of morbid obesity in Finland. Kirsi Pietiläinen’s group has also been part of the Centre of Excellence in Research on Mitochondria, Metabolism and Disease of the Academy of Finland (FinMit; 2014-2019).
