People

We are a dynamic group of researchers with a strong focus on finding novel disease modifying therapies for neurodegerative diseases.
Timo Myöhänen

Principal investigator

Prof. Timo is the PI of the NeuroCure team. He did his M.Sc. and Ph.D. theses on PREP studies (in the University of Kuopio), and his post doc periods in Helsinki, Belgium and USA teached Timo how to use different preclinical models of neurodegenerative diseases from protein level to animal models. Timo's passion is to find a disease-modifying drug for currently unstoppable neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

Dr. Erik Wallén

Co-principal investigator

Dr. Erik Wallen is the leader of NeuroCure Medicinal Chemistry, and has 20 years experience on different medicinal chemistry projects. Erik was also involved with earlier PREP inhibitor development in University of Kuopio, so he really knows what PREP and PREP inhibitor compounds are about.

Dr. Hengjing Cui

Postdoctoral researcher

Dr. Hengjing Cui is the postdoc of NeuroCure lab. She has been working with PREP-related projects since 2019, when she arrived to Prof. Myöhänen's lab as a visiting post doc. Hengjing is supervising the lab activities and masters various techniques from cloning to behavioral studies.

Bianca Fastré

PhD student

Biance Fastré is works for her PhD with Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation funded project on beta-amyloid and Tau interplay. Bianca is from University of Antwerp, and she made her master's thesis in Prof. Myöhänen's lab in University of Eastern Finland.

Xiaowen Zhang

PhD student

M.Sc. Xiaowen Zhang started her PhD in the NeuroCure lab on 5/2024, and her project focuses on testing novel ligands to combat neurodegenerative diseases.

Nikita Sormunen

Nikita Sormunen is our latest PhD student in the team, working with cellular senescence project.

Henrik Häkkinen

M.Sc. Henrik Häkkinen is a PhD student in medicinal chemistry, cooking up some cool novel ligands for our studies.

Egemen Sahim

M.Sc. Egemen Sahim is currently in a 3-year doctoral pilot program, investigating the possibilities of our ligands in cancer models.

Fanni Pöyhtäri

M.Sc. Fanni Pöyhtäri is working as technician in the Polku Therapeutics collaboration project.
