Hanski's group

Principal investigator: Ilkka Hanski, (acting PI: Marjo Saastamoinen)

The group was originally founded in 1991 by professor Ilkka Hanski when the long-term research on the Glanville fritillary butterfly was started, and ever since this large-scale project has provided the context within which much of the research on metapopulations has been conducted.

In the beginning the group was called as Metapopulation Research Group (MRG, now Metapopulation Research Centre, MRC) and it consisted only by researcher and students of professor Hanski. Later when more principal investigators joined the MRG with their own students and other personnel it became apparent that the people supervised and led by professor Hanski need to again form an own subgroup within the larger research centre. It is simply called here Hanski's group.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Ilkka Hanski on Tuesday, May 10th 2016. He will be greatly missed as the leader of the group and as a friend by us all.

An obituary written by Anna-Liisa Laine in Nature.

Professor Hanski did express his wish that the research he had started would continue by his students and colleagues after his passing. We want to honor that wish and therefore the projects started by prof. Hanski are continued by the other people involved and they can still be found from these pages.
