Canthonini & Helictopleurini - Scarabaeidae beetles

These two tribes belong to the true dung beetles.

Helictopleurini (Coprinae) are completely endemic to Madagascar , consisting of one genus only, with ~80 species. Canthonini (Scarabaeinae) have a wider distribution, but the 12 genera with ~170 species in Madagascar are endemic. Helictopleurini are tunnelers, while Canthonini are rollers. Both tribes occur across Madagascar , in open and forest habitats, although the distributions of species are quite narrow. Dung and carrion are used for feeding and breeding by both tribes, but the preferences differ strongly between species.
