Lipoproteins carry lipids such as cholesterol and triglycerides in the bloodstream to all tissues. High levels of certain circulating lipoproteins, such as cholesterol-rich low-density lipoprotein (LDL) are associated with increased risk for cardiovascular diseases. In addition, the quality of the lipoprotein particles influences the cardiovascular risk of a person.
We have developed methods to study the quality of LDL and other lipoproteins. We are examining environmental, dietary, and other factors that influence the quality of lipoproteins and their molecular effects on various tissues and cell types. Although lipoprotein quality appears to be influenced by genetic factors, the quality can be improved by a healthy lifestyle or by cholesterol-lowering medication. We are currently working on finding new ways to improve lipoprotein quality.
