Abstract
In the Western philosophical tradition, the distinction between humans and animals has long influenced our understanding of ethics and politics. Unfortunately, this perspective often reinforces hierarchies that devalue animal life and marginalize those considered “less than human”. Such hierarchies thus shape the treatment of other forms of life and contribute to systems of exclusion and oppression.
This article traces the philosophical history of how the distinction between humans and animals has evolved in modern thought and challenges both traditional and contemporary manifestations of this divide. By questioning these categories, the article seeks to move beyond hierarchical thinking.
