Development Days 2026 Working Group session

Invitation to submit abstracts to our Development Days 2026 Working Group session

We are pleased to invite abstracts submissions for our 2026 session titled From Crises to Just Sustainable Futures: Reimagining the ‘Ecotopia’ in Socio-Ecological Systems.  The session will take place onsite on 27–28 February 2026 at Päärakennus (Main Building), University of Helsinki, Finland as part of the Development Days Conference.

Session Overview

Inspired by Ernest Callenbach’s vision of ecotopia—an ecologically harmonious society built on cooperation, justice, and long-term sustainability—this session examines how such futures can be re-imagined in the face of mounting global crises. As climate disruption, biodiversity loss, inequality, and political instability intensify, socio-ecological systems (SES) across the Global North and South face unprecedented pressure. This working group invites critical, forward-looking contributions that explore just, resilient, and transformative SES futures through a deep sustainability and systems thinking lens.
