Overuse of antimicrobials in animal production is a major threat for human and animal health, through the emergence of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria, and potential residue spread to meat and the environment. Antimicrobials are, however, essential for combatting disease in current animal production systems, and will be relevant to treat disease incidences also in the future. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to introduce management practices which reduce the need for veterinary antimicrobial drugs, through improved animal welfare, health, and robustness.
