An online seminar was organized about initial experiences of certificate-based admission to higher education ad its effects on upper secondary education on Tuesday 17 November 2020. The certificate-based admission to higher education was launched widely in Finland in Spring 2020 and it has raised a lot of discussion and concerns about possible changes to students' all-round education and life skills. This is because different subjects are weighed by a different number of points in the admissions and this is feared to guide upper seconday school students' studying during their 3-year education by prioritizing some subjects while neglecting others. There is also concern for students' wellbeing.
The seminar brought together professionals from upper seconday schools, universities, The Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture, and other related organizations. The participants were offered important, multifaceted and interesting perspectives and experiences and the discussions sparked opinions and further viewpoints on a shared online platform.
The seminar (in Finnish) can be watched on our Finnish pages where you can also find the afternoon's programme.
