In recent years, HFSBG’s research has primarily focused on traffic psychology and traffic safety issues. It encompasses topics such as bicycle helmets, driver fatigue, risky driving, road traffic suicides, road user identities, traffic safety culture, and victim blaming in media and police reporting. However, HFSBG members have a wide range of research interests, including research and publishing ethics, as well as the roles of attitudes and values in various aspects of human behavior.
A tradition at HFSBG is not only publishing scientific papers in peer-reviewed international journals but also regularly publishing research reports in Finnish (e.g., for the Finnish Road Safety Council, Radun & Radun, 2023), as well as texts in Finnish for more general audiences (e.g., car magazine readers, Radun & Radun, 2024) and specific populations (e.g., professional drivers’ organizations, Radun & Radun, 2020). We have also published a guest column and several opinion letters regarding traffic safety issues in major Finnish newspapers (e.g., Radun & Lajunen, 2017). Additionally, we have submitted statements to Finnish ministries and parliament (three in the last five years) and have participated in the preparation of various preventive strategies (e.g., Home and Leisure Accident Prevention Target Program 2014–2020). Furthermore, we are actively participating in OTI’s scientific group to develop investigation methods.
