About

The Research Group for Foreign Language Education at the Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Helsinki researches, teaches, and develops foreign language education.

The members of the research group have a wide range of research foci within foreign language education at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels of education as well as in pre-service and in-service teacher education. We conduct research on various research topics including language assessment, communicative oral proficiency practice, early teaching of foreign languages, the proficiency levels of the Common European Framework and the European Language Portfolio, multicultural education, teacher development, and language learning and teaching.

The research group is involved in developing the national curricula and school leaving examinations. We also participate actively in developing and implementing in-service training, both nationally and internationally.

The research group works actively with other colleagues within the University of Helsinki, nationally with other universities in Finland as well as with international partners. Teachers at the teacher training schools and researchers at the language departments of the University of Helsinki are naturally our important collaborative partners in developing foreign language education. We maintain and look for productive and inspiring contacts with other national and international research groups and individual researchers. Please find the profiles of the individual researchers in the People section and do not hesitate to contact us for future collaboration.

The Research Group for Foreign Language Education is also part of the Research Community for Humanities and Social Sciences Education at the Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Helsinki.
