Sedation research

Our goal is to improve the safety of commonly used sedatives.

Sedatives are used commonly used in horses to facilitate minor procedures, provide pain relief and as premedication to general anesthesia. The most popular sedatives have, however, many untoward effects on e.g. the cardiovascular system and the equine gastrointestinal tract. We’re investigating, how to prevent or mitigate these adverse outcomes without reducing the sedative or pain-reducing potency of these sedatives. We’re also studying the impact of sedatives on the energy metabolism of both healthy horses and horses with metabolic disorders.
