With 40 different countries holding elections this year, 2024 has been labeled the "super year of elections." Finland has already voted for its 13th president, and the European Parliament elections took place over the summer. Globally, the most highly anticipated election is set to happen within a month, as the United States prepares to choose its next president. The role of digital platforms and media in elections has been growing throughout the 21st century. This Rajapinta x HEPP meetup focuses on recent research regarding the role of social media and influencers in democratic elections.

SYNTHETICA examines the complex and multifaceted ripple effects and limitations of AI-human interplay in the contexts of work, business, and society. It focuses on contemporary data-driven societies through their ICT development and application practices as well as discursive constructions that manifest the limitations of this technology. The presentation delves into the role of AI bots in the context of Finnish presidential elections.

The PLEDGE team from Helsinki led a multi-project collaboration across ten countries to study European Parliament election campaigns on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Based on four weeks of short-video data, Emilia Palonen will present preliminary results from country reports covering Bulgaria, Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden.
