Eero Vuoksimaa

, senior researcher, received PhD in psychology in 2010 and a title of docentship in neuropsychology in 2015, both from the University of Helsinki. He did postdoctoral training at the University of California San Diego in 2012-2013. He was Academy of Finland Research Fellow in 2018-2023. He is currently funded by The Sigrid Jusélius senior researcher post (2024-2028). As a group leader, his guiding values are excellence in science and the well-being of team members. Eero is grateful to all funders that have supported his journey in studying Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive aging. He would also like to thank participants of the older Finnish Twin Cohort study for their contributions to science.

Aino Aaltonen

, doctoral researcher, completed her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and master’s degree in psychology. She focused her studies on neuropsychology and is interested in various neurological disorders, memory, executive functions, and aging. She joined Vuoksimaa’s group in 2023 to work on the TWINGEN project. Her dissertation focuses on the early identification of Alzheimer’s disease, particularly examining episodic memory and mild cognitive impairment in relation to blood-based biomarkers and genetics.

Karin Lohi

, doctoral researcher, is investigating practical ways to identify Alzheimer’s disease early across the population using both remote cognitive tests and blood biomarkers. She also aims to support the implementation of early diagnosis approaches by modeling Alzheimer’s disease risk to understand differences in symptoms and onset. Alongside her research, she is interested in science communication to reduce stigma and improve clinical care through better community engagement.

She is pursuing a doctoral degree in the Doctoral Programme of Clinical Research (CLINDOC). Previously, she completed a bachelor’s degree in Biomedicine from the University of Turku and a master’s degree in Translational Medicine from the University of Helsinki.

Vilma Riekkinen

is a clinical psychologist who joined the CBA group in 2025. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in the Doctoral Programme in Clinical Research (CLINDOC). Her research focuses on cognitive screening methods for the early detection of Alzheimer’s disease, with an emphasis on individuals aged 80 years and older. Prior to her doctoral studies, she worked in a geriatric outpatient clinic, where she conducted neuropsychological assessments as part of diagnostic evaluations and provided psychological support to individuals living with dementia and their caregivers.

Toni Saari

, senior researcher, completed his PhD at the University of Eastern Finland in 2021, after which he worked at the Kuopio University Hospital neurology outpatient clinic as a psychologist before joining the CBA group in 2023 as a postdoc. He received the title of docent in neuropsychology from the University of Helsinki in 2026. His research interests are at the intersection of neurology, psychiatry and psychometrics, with a focus on mild behavioral impairment and other neuropsychiatric prodromes of dementia.

Cindy Sarmento

is a doctoral researcher at the Doctoral Programme for Population Health and Human Behaviour. In her dissertation project she’s investigating the interplay between brain, inflammatory processes, and sex-specific biology that impact the development of Alzheimer’s disease, using omics and health registry data.

Cindy completed her BSc degree in Genetics and Biotechnology at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, and her MSc degree in Forensic Genetics at the University of Porto, Portugal. Her journey at FIMM began in 2024 as a rotation student in the FIMM-EMBL International PhD Programme.

Arina Tagmazian

is a Doctoral student at the Helsinki Institute of life science. My long way to FIMM student started in Moscow, where I have got my bachelor’s degree in biology in Russian State Agrarian University and a master’s degree in bioinformatics in High School of Economics. The combination of biology and data science seems to me the most fascinating direction in science at the moment.
My previous researches had quite a wide spectrum of interests, from exploring the Bovine leukemia virus resistance in cattle to an analysis of alternative splicing in African non-biting midges, Polypedilum vanderplanki. Currently, I am interested in neuroscience research combining image processing, deep learning and epigenetic analysis.
In my free time, I'm practicing meditation, learning to play the ukulele, drawing by watercolor, spending time in nature, meeting new people, and opening for myself new activities.

Mia Urjansson

medical laboratory technologist, has been working as a Clinical Research Nurse in the Vuoksimaa Group since 2019.  Her current work in the group is project coordinating, assisting in planning the new studies and ethical applications. She has the main responsibility of all contacts with study subjects, coordinating new study visits and interviews, data handling and returning the results for the subjects.

Anni Varjonen

, doctoral researcher, completed her bachelor’s degree at Robert Morris University (USA) in Clinical Psychology, after which she continued to complete her master’s degree in Human Neuroscience at the University of Turku. Anni's dissertation project focuses on risk and protective factors and cortical structures associated with dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Her research utilizes twin design and the population based older Finnish Twin Cohort study.

Paula Iso-Markku

is a medical doctor, and graduated from the University of Eastern Finland in 2012. She defended her thesis about the relationships of physical activity, cognition, and dementia mortality in Finnish twins in 2019. She is also working on her specialization in clinical physiology and nuclear medicine. Her post doc project is about the relatioship of cardiovascular risk factors and cognition in Finnish twins.
