Conference & Project News – Issue of Identity

The interdisciplinary Issue of Identity conference (29–30 September 2025, University of Pécs) examined how identity shapes views on European integration in the Visegrad (V4) and Nordic countries. Peter Stadius and Jana Lainto represented CENS as speakers.

The conference The Issue of Identity: Visions of European Integration in V4 and Nordic Countries, organised as part of a cross-regional research project of the same name, brought together historians, political scientists, IR scholars, and social psychologists to address how memory, emotions, and historical narratives inform national and European identities, and how these influence support for EU integration in Central and Nordic contexts.

From the Nordic side, Peter Stadius presented a talk on Nordic exceptionalism and European integration, while Jana Lainto spoke on Scandinavian Horizons: Arnošt Vilém Kraus and Czech-Scandinavian cultural transfers at the turn of the 20th century

CENS is actively involved in the project, collaborating with partner institutions including the University of Pécs, the Vienna School of International Studies, the Universities of Prešov and Helsinki, and Nicolaus Copernicus University.  The project explores the balance between sovereignty and federalism in European integration, placing particular emphasis on comparing the dynamics in V4 and Nordic countries.
