The ERC-funded project Scientist in the loop – Automation of scientific discovery (SCI-AI) aims to construct a new understanding of AI-augmented research. It asks: how can we analyze collaboration between human and AI agents in scientific discovery?
SCI-AI is a strongly interdisciplinary project. It works in the intersections of philosophy of science, cognitive science, and science studies. The project views scientific discovery as a collaborative process of problem-solving, not a mysterious act of a lone genius. AI system are an integral part of an increasing number of research labs, making it necessary to understand the roles of human and machine in AI-augmented labs and collaborative research.
SCI-AI uncovers problem-solving processes in AI-augmented labs, examines the implications of AI-augmented discovery for the epistemology of science, and uses automated discovery as a mirror to explore human creativity and intellect.
SCI-AI is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and housed in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Helsinki.
