ySKILLS involves 15 partners from 13 European countries to enhance and maximise the long-term positive impact of the information and communications technology (ICT) environment on multiple aspects of wellbeing for children and young people by stimulating resilience through the enhancement of digital skills. Especially, ySKILLS examines how digital skills mediate the risks and opportunities related to ICT use by 12- to 17-year-olds in Europe (see https://yskills.eu). The Finnish partner in the ySKILLS is Professor Katariina Salmela-Aro (Faculty of Education, University of Helsinki). In collaboration with her, we study in 12–14-year-olds possible effects of ICT skills (measured with the ySKILLS questionnaire) on task performance and brain activity (measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging) during mathematical and linguistic tasks in distracted (e.g., by task-irrelevant speech during math or reading tasks) and undistracted conditions.
