The study sheds light on the Missale Aboense, the first printed book for Finland.
A new study brings fresh insights into Missale Aboense, the first printed book for Finland, combining scientific analysis with historical research.

We are happy to share the publication of our new research on Missale Aboense, the first printed book printed for Finland in 1488. The study offers a detailed investigation of this remarkable work, combining historical questions with advanced natural scientific methods.

Over the course of two years, an interdisciplinary team of researchers collaborated to examine the materials and techniques used in the production of the book. Using a range of analytical approaches, the study provides new insights into e.g. parchment preparation and printing practices.

Printed books on parchment remain a relatively understudied group within history. By focusing on Missale Aboense, our research contributes to a better understanding of both regional book production and broader technological practices in the late 15th century.

We hope that this study will encourage further research into similar objects and open up new perspectives on early printed books!
