Honorary doctors

At the conferment ceremony of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, individuals distinguished in their field are conferred with the title of honorary doctor.

Professor Wolfgang Baumgärtner, Department of Pathology, University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover (TiHo)

Professor Baumgärtner's extensive research career has focused on key fields including neuropathology and neuroimmunology, cell transplantation, and the pathology of viral diseases in domestic and wild animals.

Professor Baumgärtner has actively developed postgraduate professional and research education in veterinary pathology in Europe. As vice president and president of the European College of Veterinary Pathology Baumgärtner has played a key role in establishing the organisation’s ECVP Diplomate programme.

He has collaborated with our Faculty’s researchers, particularly in neuropathology. The Department of Pathology at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover is among the leading European veterinary training units and has close ties with Finnish veterinarians.

 

Professor h.c. Kati Hakkarainen, Doctor of Medicine and Surgery, Specialty in clinical microbiology and virology, previously head of education, Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology, Tampere University

Professor Hakkarainen has had a long career in the development of medical teaching and pedagogy and she is an internationally esteemed educator known for using problem-based learning and progress testing in medical studies.

Professor Hakkarainen has held several significant leadership and elected positions. She has served as executive board member for the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE).

She has supported the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine for several decades in the development of skills assessment. Currently she represents the Faculty as an expert in an Erasmus+ project collaboratively developing a progress test for European veterinary training units.

 

Emeritus Professor Edward J. Hall, Small Animal Internal Medicine, University of Bristol

Professor Hall specialises in small animal medicine, particularly gastroenterology. His research has focused on intestinal inflammation and permeability.

Professor Hall has been involved in international organisations, contributing to the creation of international standards for canine and feline gastrointestinal endoscopy. He has edited and authored several key manuals in the field.

In addition, he has inspired our Faculty’s research group on small animal medicine and acted as an opponent at the Faculty.

 

Professor Dominiek Maes, Porcine Health Management, Ghent University

Professor Maes is an internationally renowned veterinarian with expertise in porcine diseases and health management.

He has written extensively on key topics including porcine respiratory disease, sow reproduction, swine salmonella and the development of antibiotic resistance.

He is an active developer of European specialist training and veterinary further education.

Professor Maes has visited Finland on multiple occasions to give lectures at veterinary training seminars.

He has collaborated closely with our Faculty’s researchers and served several times as an opponent at the Faculty.

 

Professor Nigel P. Minton, Applied Molecular Microbiology, School of Life Sciences; Director of BBSRC/EPSRC Synthetic Biology Research Centre (SBRC) and the BBSRC Carbon Recycling Network, University of Nottingham

Professor Minton heads a major research group in synthetic biology. The group aims to develop the diagnostics and prevention of pathogenic microbes and to exploit the medical properties of beneficial strains. He has a global academic and industrial collaboration network.

For close to 20 years, Professor Minton has cooperated with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine research group Clostridium botulinum in three extensive EU-funded projects which he has coordinated. He has also been a key partner in Faculty projects funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and the Academy of Finland.
