All graduates who have completed a master’s or doctoral degree from the following faculties by 22 May 2025 may participate in the Faculty of Philosophy's Conferment Ceremony in 2025, provided they have not previously been conferred by the Faculty of Philosophy. Participants may also bring a companion. The five faculties that comprise the historical Faculty of Philosophy are
If your graduation date is very close to the Conferment, carefully consider whether you should register for the conferment, and review the cancellation policy. The Conferment Committee cannot advise on individual cases as circumstances vary.
Jubilee masters and doctors in the 2025 ceremony are those who were conferred as masters or doctors in 1977 and who graduated before 23 May 1975. Those conferred in 1977 ceremony but who graduated on or after 24 May 1975 will participate as jubilee promovendi in the 2027 conferment ceremony.
The participation fee for a solo promovendi attending the conferment ceremony is 390 €. It is recommended that you attend with a companion, in which case the companion’s fee is €290. A combined offer price of 620 € is available for promovendi and companion when purchased together. If two promovendi attend as each other’s companions, each pays the solo promovendi fee and registers separately.
The conferment ceremony is a unique celebration, an unforgettable way to honour your degree and mark the end of an important phase in life. Participation fees cover less than half of the total event costs, with the budget supported significantly by faculty grants that help subsidise promovendi participation fees. Sponsorships and foundation funding also play an important role.
The promovendi fee includes a rich programme, covering at least:
There is no charge for companions attending the conferment ceremony. For companions, the participation fee covers:
Please note that additional costs may arise from formal attire for the ceremony, as well as from purchasing a master’s ring, doctoral hat, or sword.
Promovendi may opt to attend only the rehearsal, the conferment ceremony, the formal procession, and either the church service or the non-denominational laurel celebration. In this case, the fee is 140 €, with or without a companion, and includes a commemorative register, a video recording of the ceremony, and professional photos.
Promovendi may also participate on paper, in absentia, which grants the right to use their academic insignia and includes their name and information in the Matricula. The fee for in absentia is 100 €.
Entry to Flora’s Day day event is free. Lunch on Flora’s Day is reserved separately, with more information to follow.
Registration is open until 28 February 2025. Registration is binding, and payment is required at the time of registration. By registering, you accept the event's cancellation policy. Payment can be made by credit card, mobile payment (MobilePay, Siirto), or through Finnish banks' online payment services.
If you are unable to attend, please notify us immediately to make the arrangements for your cancellation at fil-promootio@helsinki.fi. You may cancel your registration up to five weeks before the Conferment Act, by 18 April 2025, to retain your eligibility for a future Conferment Ceremony. This deadline is due to the printing schedule of the commemorative register—your name can only be listed in the register once. Cancellations are non-transferable to another person. A €50 processing fee will be deducted from the refund.
In the event of a cancellation by the University due to force majeure, all participation fees will be fully refunded; however, no other costs will be reimbursed.
The Conferment Committee publishes the Matricula, which is a commemorative register listing both present and absent promovendi at the master’s and doctoral levels and the honorary doctors. The personal details for the register are filled in during registration in either Finnish, Swedish, or English.
The Matricula is a traditional, printed register of personal information and has preserved a significant portion of Finnish and university history. Professional and amateur genealogists can discover pieces of their family history through these archives. The oldest student register of the Turku Academy, dating from 1640–1817, was destroyed in the Great Fire of Turku in 1827, but information that survived has been compiled over the centuries and was also digitised in the 2000s.
The Matricula published by the Conferment Committee also officially serves as an traditional invitation to the ceremony, contains the official list of participants, including jubilee promovendi and honorary doctors. The register is available at the Conferment Act.
Once a name is printed in the conferment register, the individual is considered conferred, even if they cannot attend the ceremony in person, for example, due to a last-minute illness.
