We offer a doctoral hat and sword to those being conferred at the University of Helsinki under the following terms until 31 October 2026.
The price of the doctoral hat is €699.00 (€556.97 excluding VAT). Hats are measured using a hat former. We carry out measurements continuously across Finland. The hat, the University lyre, a storage box, as well as measurement and delivery are included in the price.
Our delivery time is approximately five weeks.
In addition to doctoral hats, we hold exclusive distribution rights to the original doctoral swords designed by Akseli Gallen-Kallela and manufactured by the German firm WKC-Solingen. The gilding is genuine 24-carat gold. The price of the sword is €405.00 (€322.71 excluding VAT). The sword, emblem, scabbard, suspension ring, protective bag, engraving, and delivery are included in the price.

In autumn 2026, Wahlman regrettably does not offer a discount on the doctoral hat to those taking part in the University of Helsinki conferment ceremony, but those who purchase their doctoral hat from them will receive a discount on the doctoral sword. If private customers order their hat for the conferment ceremony, they may therefore obtain the sword at the same time for €345 (incl. VAT 25.5%). The price also includes engraving. The sword with engraving normally costs €410 (incl. VAT).

The doctoral hat is delivered as a handcrafted product from start to finish, with a competitive service concept that caters to customers – even for rental needs.
The price of a doctoral hat is €650 and the price of a doctoral sword is €350. Orders placed by the end of November receive a 5% discount. Head measurement and ordering can be conveniently arranged in central Helsinki through our partner shop.
Due to the spring and summer 2026 conferment season, from 21 January onwards doctoral hat orders will incur an expedited production fee of €45 and an expedited delivery fee of €45.
In Helsinki, head measurement services and high-quality men’s formalwear rental are provided by Gasell GP, Iso Roobertinkatu 35–37, tel. +358 50 341 5532. A separate service fee is charged by the shop for head measurement and order processing.

I work in the Helsinki and Kotka areas and offer a reduced price for orders placed during autumn 2025. The price for straight-brimmed hats, such as those used in the conferments for philosophy, medicine, social sciences, etc., is € 649, including VAT, the lyre, and the hat box. The regular price is € 699.
It is best to place your hat order well in advance, as hats are not kept in stock but are made to measure based on the graduand’s head size and shape. If the order is left to the very last minute, I may not be able to accept it. So, please order early!

The Doctor of Philosophy hat, the standard black doctoral hat, costs €679, including the lyre/emblem, hat box, and VAT. I also make hats for other faculties. For example, the price for Medicine and Economics is also €679 when the shape is the same as the straight-brimmed Doctor of Philosophy hat and the hat includes an emblem. Doctor of Theology hats without an emblem cost €649 (including hat box and VAT). Doctor of Science (Technology) hats including the emblem, box, and VAT are €719.

The master’s ring does not necessarily have to be made of gold or a specially crafted master’s ring; any gold-coloured ring is suitable for use in the ceremony. The ring is worn on the left index finger over the glove during the ceremony.
The laurel wreath is included in the participation fee for the master’s promovendi.

A conferment dress, meaning a white or black evening gown, is available for hire from Ateljee Esvee. This dress adheres to the conferment dress code, making it suitable for the conferment ceremony, the conferment dinner, and the ball.
Originally, the conferment dress was designed in white for master promovendi and wreath-binders for the Faculty of Philosophy’s conferment ceremony at the University of Helsinki in 2014. It is now also available in black for doctoral conferment.
The ensemble includes a pleated evening gown, a sash (not for a sword), and a long-sleeved bolero. The hire price for the entire ensemble is 250 euros, with the dress alone available for 190 euros, and the bolero for 60 euros (prices are exclusive of VAT).

Generally, the packages require very few alterations, as we have many different lengths and sizes of tailcoats with A, B, C, and D measurements. If alterations are still needed, we charge €15 per alteration (regular price from €20.90).

Portrait Photography may be organised at the Conferment Ceremony During the conferment act and/or ball, so that graduates and guests have the opportunity to get their portrait taken individually or with their companion/friends in a studio portrait. Up to four people can fit in the portrait at a time. To facilitate the arrangements for portrait photography, please register in advance via the web form by 21 April 2025.
